20131119 HeartSmart Walk Eartham

Led by Peter Brooks
The third best walk with Heartsmart in over two years

Slindon Folley

Eartham House, the current home of Great Ballard School

This photo shows not Autumn Gold but Autumn RED
A whole forest red in colour.

One of the first photos of me on a HeartSmart walk :-)

Only 15 of us on this walk but spread out over several hundred yards, when we were not busy nattering.

This  Red berried tree is a 'Spindle' Euonymus europaeus
Wacky colour combination of bright pink four-part capsules with orange berries within.
Frequent small tree on calcareous soils, often in hedges or woods.

This small building at Crouch Farm Eartham, I guess is a well for Eartham. It is dated 1907 and is exceptionally good condition.

Petworth House, National Trust

I have passed this place so many times, but this is my first visit.
My favorite artist 'Turner' painted twenty masterpieces whilst staying here and they are beautiful in real life. Of the 15 I found I now need to find the four remaining that are still on the premises. The one named Chichester Canal, in the Red Banqueting Hall is so much more vibrant than the copy presented to me when I left Westminster Housing. My old boss Maria Power knew me better than I thought at the time.
Seeing this beautiful building, Actually buildings within buildings, inside and out is amazing and shows the skills of builders and artist from the 13th century to the present day.

This sculpture of Nero was from the first century AD, whereas the robin below was only sculpted this year. Hopefully these works never end being produced.

Autumn is now approaching fast, what was vibrant and green last week is quickly disappearing or turning gold or brown.

Most of the trees bearing berries, fruit and nuts are so full and abundant i presume we may have a protracted and inclement winter. There is so much mistletoe appearing  in the grounds, it is like nothing, I have seen in the U.K. before.

Older Hill, Woolbedding Sussex HeartSmart Fri 18 Oct 2013

I had never heard of this place and couldn't imagine a more wondrous place. If only I was ten or twelve again and able to run, scramble and climb like I did back then. This is just like the more famous Devils Punch-bowl, only better. I will be returning to explore more and see more.

Lovely Company on this HeartSmart walk led by Fiona. Many thanks to Bruce and Peter on collecting the Sweet Chestnuts. Personally without their advice and enthusiasm I would not have been able to tell the difference between the Sweet variety and the more famous Horse Chestnuts.

The beauty of this caterpillar is fantastic compared to the moth it will soon turn into.
The national trust is working hard in this area and achieving far more than most of us would imagine.
Keep-Up-The-Good-Work.
